Vinterviken walk

Welcome to Bredäng station, the starting point for this walk. Here you begin with seeing Bredängs church, a modernistic building from 1969.

Bredängs centrum was built in 1965 along with the tunnelbana station.

Further down the route on Odd Fellowvägen you see Jakobsbergs gård, a big yellow house from the 1700s, used today by various organizations for activities, and can be rented for parties and meetings.

With a nice view over the Mälaren, this yellow building is a popular fika destination south of Stockholm.

The house was built in 1867 and is very well preserved. The cafe opened in 1966 and the building is known for its architecture and the beautiful view.

A pinpoint to guide you in the right path.

Called Fridhems brygga, you have just passed into the Mälarhöjden area. Here you see an old villa called Bredablick from the beginning of the 1900s.

This area you are walking on, Pettersbergsvägen, celebrated 100 years in 2013, one century after getting a railway connection with the city.

Here you also walk by a stage along the path, where theater performances are held in the outdoors. This opened in 2013 with a view across the water.

Traditionally said to be the well by which Swedish poet Carl Michael Bellman refers to in perhaps his most famous poem “Vila vid denna källa”, - Rest by this well, written when he was 50 years old.

In the area there are also several old villas from the 1880s and 1900s.

Cool Pier with benches to sit and look at the sunset across the Mälaren lake.

These pits, used for experiments, are available to walk into and today the land is protected by law since 1995. Dynamite was invented in 1866, and these bunkers were made in 1870.

In 1868 at least 14 workers perished in an experiment related to the production of nitroglycerin.

The name Vinterviken comes from the winter path created on the Mälaren lake once the ice froze.

A red bricked building - Alfred Nobels old dynamite factory from 1891. Currently a restaurant from the known chef Markus Aujalay.

Go inside the building! The factory was called “Syran”, Swedish for “Acid” and on the top floor, chambers where sulfuric acid used to be stored can be seen, needed for the development of nitroglycerin.

The area was used until 1980 for test explosions. Across the field, there is a dedication to the workers who lost their lives in this dangerous business.

During the warm months, there are greenhouses, open farms and a café, well worth a visit. There is also a store that sells pottery and a bakery.

Markets are arranged during autumn, Christmas and spring, as well as other events with music.

This station opened in 1964. On the southern exit you have a mountain elevator going up to Nybohovsberget, a 230m long distance. The trip, now free, used to cost 25 öre until 1970.

Next to the station is the Trekanten lake, on average only 4 meters deep.

Feel free to get some fika or food, or if desired, continue the walk to lovely Södermalm with a short walk across the beach to Hornstull beach and park.
